Private Sector As Agents Of Change
By Izam S. Ya'akub
Bandar Seri
Begawan - The role of the private sector as agents of change in
assisting the government by directing what it needs to deliver was
highlighted by Dato Hj Hamdilah bin Hj Abdul Wahab, Deputy Minister at
the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources, in his opening remarks
at the Asia Europe Emerging Economic Leaders Forum, at The Empire
Hotel and Country Club yesterday morning.
"I see the role of the private sector
as equal partner as well as a change agent. I see them as leading
practitioners, not only in taking advantage of business opportunities
and helping in the development of innovation and entrepreneurship, but
also in guiding our government with what it needs to deliver right,"
said Dato Hj Hamdilah.
He said the synergy between public
and private sector will make the work of developing SMEs a more
effective and rewarding undertaking for all concerned, after citing
that the mutually beneficial arrangement was evident at the four-day
forum, which opened yesterday.
The deputy minister acknowledged the
strong support for this event from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs &
Trade and the Ministry Industry & Primary Resources along with several
large and local successful companies in Brunei, BLNG Sdn Bhd, HSBC,
QAF, Adinin Groups of Companies, Galfar Pembinaan dan Perusahaan Sdn
Bhd, DST, Radio Television Brunei, Asia Inc and Brunei Press Sdn Bhd.
The deputy minister holds the view
that both regions SMEs are able to partner and do business in the new
and growing BIMPEAGA market, as EAGA like Asia-EU is very big and
challenging in areas in their own different way. He added that the
regions need to be more focused and clear about impediments, removing
of factors which will enable business to take root and what the
opportunities are and where they are located in the respective
regions.
The deputy minister also said that
Chambers of Commerce have a very important role to play in promoting
individual SME as well as the wider interest of the business
community, with the outcomes of the discussions and recommendations
providing greater impetus to the ongoing work in the various fora of
Asem generally and more specifically the Ministry of Industry and
Primary Resources to rejuvenate the various Brunei Chamber of Commerce
and Business Associations so that they will be more professionally
managed and run, and become credible business organisations
representing all business men and women in the country. --
