Germans afraid of big bad wolf
Gelsenkirchen -
Residents of a German city were warned not to let their children play
alone outdoors after a wolf escaped from a local zoo, police said.
The beast was at large Sunday --
despite an intense search by police, zookeepers, hunters and a
helicopter -- after fleeing the zoo in Gelsenkirchen on Saturday
night, a police spokesman said.
The wolf escaped after jumping over
an electric fence during a fight between members of its pack in the
wolf enclosure in the city in western Germany's industrialised Ruhr
region.
"It's a very ferocious animal that
won't be easy to catch," the spokesman said.
Although the wolf should pose little
danger to people unless cornered or harassed, police on Sunday advised
people to ensure their children did not play alone outdoors and to
keep their dogs leashed while out walking. --
