Massive Haul Of Digital Equipment
By M K Anwar
Bandar Seri
Begawan - In one of the biggest haul of digital satellite
receivers and accessories by the Preventive and Intelligence Division
of the Customs Department this year, officers from the department
confiscated a variety of undeclared goods worth more than $10,000
stored in two containers in Kg Kiarong yesterday.
Acting on public information, Customs
officers conducted a weeklong surveillance operation on the storage
area before raiding the place.
Inside the containers officers found
digital satellite receivers as well its accessories including parabola
jacks and cables. Also found at the site was the owner of the
equipment, who at-the time was taking out some of the digital
receivers from the containers.
According to Customs officers, the
undeclared items were hidden among officially declared equipment. Up
until 6.30pm yesterday, officers were still recording the large
quantity of undeclared satellite equipment.
The Bulletin was also told that some
of the equipment was smuggled into Brunei from a neighbouring country.
Customs officers confiscated all the undeclared items including a car.
The owner, meanwhile, could face charges under the Broadcasting Act on
top of the Customs Act.
The Preventive and Intelligence
Section appreciated the cooperation extended to them by the public
members against the illegal activity that violated the Customs Act and
urged members of the public to contact their hotline number 2382422 or
8714422 if they have any information on illegal activities. --
