By M K Anwar & Hi Minor Absah

Bandar Seri Begawan - A 24-year-old man drowned yesterday in the vicinity of Pulau Sibungur after trying to save his grandfather who fell off his boat that went out of control.

A massive search was launched by 43 personnel involving the Marine Fire Services, Marine Police and Royal Brunei Navy and Kasmin Kasim's body was found in the evening. It was sent to RIPAS Hospital for a post mortem.

It all began after the deceased's grandfather had just finished purchasing fuel for his boat at a filling station at Pulau Sibungur. When he started the boat's engine, he fell into the water as the engine revved- up suddenly making him to lose his balance.

Also in the boat that was spinning out of control was Kasmin's grandmother and a four-year-old child. Kasmin, who saw this from another boat nearby, quickly dived into the water to save his grandfather.

According to his grandmother, she tried to stop Kasmin from diving into the water but in vain.

The grandfather managed to resurface but Kasmin didn't. The Marine Police told the Bulletin that they received a call from the Marine Fire Services at about 11.25 yesterday morning.

A massive search and rescue operation ensued. Even though the rescue operation ran into difficulties with the fast increasing current in the area, they pressed on until late afternoon.

The victim's family members and members of the public also took part in the search and rescue operation.

The Police and Fire Services confirmed the body of the victim was found at the scene of the incident at 6.20 pm. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
