Seeking Integrity In Public Service
By Achong Tanjong

Bandar Seri Begawan - Twelve Development Programme for Government Middle Management Officers (DPGMMO) 2005 trainees yesterday left for a five-day study visit to Thailand.

The programme is jointly organised by the Public Service Department and Universiti Brunei Darussalam, which commenced on August 1, 2005 and will end before the fasting month.

The trainees comprising officers from various government departments and ministries are accompanied by senior UBD lecturer, Dr Hajah Sainah Hj Saim from the Faculty of Business, Economics and Policy Studies and Assistant Director of Public Service Department, Hj Junaidi Omar.

Dr Hajah Sainah said, "The theme for this year's study visit is `Integrity in the Public Service'. Public service worldwide is experiencing challenges in its capability and capacity."

"The biggest contemporary issues encountered are in the areas of accountability and transparency. The theme is thus chosen as a means to ensure accountability in public service," she added.

Organised for the third time this year, the objective of the study visit is for participants to experience and be exposed to the context and content of public organisations. Last year's study visit was to Malaysia.

The officers joining the programme are selected by the Public Service Department and while in Bangkok the trainees will be touring public organisations and institutions.

Among the programme of the visit are Public Personnel Management and Human Resource Development by Office of the Civil Service Commission and Civil Service Training Institute respectively.

Other activities include learning about the functions and responsibilities of the National Commission on Corruption Office and the Anti-Money Laundering Office as well as visit to the Ministry of ICT.

The trainees will also make a trip to the Postal Company, Ministry of Energy, Ministry of Labour and Ministry of Interior as well as the cultural site of the Royal Palace. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
