Local Intellectuals Make Regional Splash

Bandar Seri Begawan - The country's intellectuals continue to shine at regional literature and language scene including the current Malaysian National Language and Literature Month.

Universiti Brunei Darussalam lecturer Mohd Zefri Arif, who is currently pursuing his doctorate at the Universiti Malaya in Kuala Lumpur, was invited on September 10 to recite his poem at the Puisi Beradat, organised by the Socio-Culture Secretariat of Malay Islamic World at Sungai Duyong in Malacca.

Mohd Zefri Arif was also appointed a forum panel at the 13"' Malaysian National Literature Day in Ipoh, Perak last September 2-4.

At the literature event, Mohd Zefri Arif delivered a working paper, "From Rakis To Maka: Brunei Literature Treads The Global Shoreline".

A total of six forums were held at the Hotel

Casuarina in Ipoh, Perak namely Royalty in the Malay World; Royalty and Malay World Personality; Literature Tradition: The Peaks of Latest Malay Letters in the Region; Reading the Future of Malay Literature in Malaysia and Malay World; and Building World Literature and Heritage in Perak.

The event also touched on the role of palace in safeguarding and distributing Malay literature towards developing it.

Mohd Zefri Arif will deliver a working paper September 27-28 on "Communication and the Aesthetics of Brunei Arts and Cultural Heritage" in a seminar at the Universiti Malaya.

Meanwhile, another lecturer from UBD, Dayang Siti Norkalbi Haji Wahsalfelah became a panellist of an open forum on International Seminar on Traditional Embroidery September 6-7, which attempted to tackle marketing problems that besieged the weaving or songket industry. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
