Bandar Seri Begawan - The fishery industry in Brunei Darussalam has potential to export goods to Tile foreign market to help boost the country's fishery sectors in line with the government's vision to diversify the local economy.

This has been proven by a local company, H.Z. Azam Enterprise, by catching tonnes of fish from local waters, near South China Sea.

The company which owns two fishing ships (Kapal Lingkong) and alight boat are among the most modern fishing ships in the country that are equipped with hi-tech fishing technology costing about B$400,000. The ships have 18 crew which operates the fishing activity at Zone Three.

Yesterday, the company have recorded their biggest catch of 15 tonnes of various fish including Skip jack or locally known as "Bekulan Kemayau", "lkan Basung-Basung" and Solomon fish.

The catch drew a large crowd to the Fish Landing Complex in Muara to witness the historical catch.

Hj Zaini bin Hj Mohd Zain, Managing Director of H.Z. Azam Enterprise told the Sunday Bulletin that some of the catch are supplied to neighbouring country such as Sabah.

He also said in view of the upcoming fasting month, apart from fresh fish, they also have large stocks of frozen fish stored at Fish Landing Complex.

The fish caught by the company can be found at the wet markets throughout the country, including Gadong, Jcrudong and Tambing in the Brunei-Muara District.

Other types of fish caught include "Rumahan" and "Kulai" and Tuna.

Due to the low demand of Tuna in the country, the company is looking forward to export tuna to foreign markets such as Japan and Taiwan.

In April 2005, the company was the first to break the country's record in the fishing industry by successfully catching 39 tonnes of tuna fish.

They also created another record with 50 tonnes in June 2005, comprising of "Bekulan Kemayau" and Tuna fish.
