Man Gets 24 Years For Drugs

Begawan - Lim Kui Shin, 32, was sentenced to 24 years in jail
and 15 strokes of the cane after he was found guilty for possessing
66.369gm of the controlled drugs, methylamphetamine or syabu.
He was sentenced under Section 3 A,
Section 6 (b) and Section 7 of the Misuse of Drug Act Chapter 27
by the High Court on Monday.
Officers from the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) apprehended the
man on Jan 22, 2004 at a hotel in Kg Anggerek Desa, acting on a
tip-off. The NCB reminds the public that anyone caught in misuse
of drugs can be sentenced according to the seriousness of the
offence. Those found in possession of drugs with intent of
trafficking face the death penalty.
It said 490.9770gm of syabu were
confiscated from January to April 2005 and the amount exceeds the
total of 449.7355gm of methylamphetamine confiscated in 2004.
There has been a big drop in the
confiscation of marijuana by NCB in the first quarter of 2005 with
4.9208gm compared to 240.6740gm confiscated last year. |

Even the number of arrests, at 219
for drug-related activities as of May 2005, has shown a decline
compared to 355 arrests registered in the first quarter of 2004.
A huge percentage of those
arrested involved the unemployed. Last year, 377 people out of 609
arrested were unemployed. In the first quarter of 2005, 146 of the
total arrested were unemployed. |
In a press statement from NCB, it
welcomed information and cooperation from the public on drug misuse
activities by calling 147 (office hours) or 8777444 (after office
hours). --
