Brunei's Representative Participates In UK-Singapore `Materials Research' Workshop
By NYL

Bandar Seri Begawan - Dr Tan Kha Sheng, senior lecturer and interim head of the Department of Engineering, University Brunei Darussalam recently attended a `Materials Research' workshop fully sponsored by the Nanyang Technological University and Singapore's British High Commission.

The workshop was held at the Biopolis, Singapore cutting edge research clusters in health and life sciences and engineering, from Sept 12-14.

The workshop, aimed at broadening the understanding of materials for future applications, was the first event following a recent statement signed in July 2004 by Prime Ministers, Mr. Tony Blair and Mr. Lee Hsien Loong, to promote scientific collaboration between the UK and Singapore and to help build scientific capacity with Southeast Asian partners.

The British High Commission of Singapore and the School of Materials Science and Engineering of NanyangTechnological University co-organised this event to share information, encourage collaboration and strengthen linkages between scientists, researchers, - academics and industrialists from the UK and Singapore and to improve scientific knowledge through the promotion of fellowships and research collaboration opportunities in the UK and Singapore for researchers from South East Asia.

Around 17 scientists from the UK elite universities and research centres and 20 scientists from Singapore's materials and engineering communities delivered their talk on cutting edge research, design and innovation in functional materials, materials for clean energy systems, materials for next generation of electronics, materials modelling, challenges in materials characterisation, nanomaterials, bio-materials and materials in medicine.

The workshop was well attended by researchers and engineers from Singapore as well as from other Asean countries.

Posters on recent advances in materials science and engineering from Singapore and Asean countries were also on display. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
