Some 20 students of the Sayyidina
Umar Al-Khatab Secondary School participated in the 2nd Outreach
Programme organised by the Brunei Museums Department. This is the
second school to be involved with the scientific studies programme.
Curator of Natural Studies, Brunei
Museums Department, Samhan bin Nyawa, who is also manager of the park,
greeted the students upon arrival. Also present were five teachers and
rangers of the park who acted as guides. The students were divided
into groups of four. The two-day programme saw the students staying at
Purun Hall just by the bank of Merimbun Lake. The Merimbun Lake,
located in Tutong district, is an Asean Heritage Park. It is a living
archive of nature, natural medicine, history, flora and fauna.
For their project, the students
observed the biodiversity of the natural landscape of the Merimbun
Lake basin. They studied insects, mammals, birds, fishes and botany.
The Merimbun Lake is home to over 50 different varieties of fresh
water fish apart from the crocodile.
