Sultan Joins World Leaders At UN

Begawan - His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei
Darussalam yesterday morning attended the opening session of the
United Nations High-Level Plenary Meeting at the General Assembly Hall
of the United Nations Headquarters in New York, United States, RTB
reported.
The monarch was accompanied by
Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade His Royal Highness Prince
Mohamed Bolkiah.
The UN meeting was co-chaired by
President of the Gabonese Republic El Hadj Omar Bongo Ondima and Prime
Minister of Sweden Goran Persson.
In the afternoon, His Majesty and
other world leaders attended an official luncheon hosted by UN
Secretary-General Kofi Annan in honour of their attendance of the 2005
World Summit.
The three-day summit, which opened
Wednesday, coincides with the UN's 60" anniversary.
Among the objectives of the meeting
was to discuss the status of the Millennium Development Goals, a set
of ambitious targets ranging from halving extreme poverty to halting
the spread of HIV/AIDS and providing universal primary education by
2015.
It also focuses on Annan's proposals
on United Nations reforms which were introduced to the Assembly last
March. Meanwhile, His Majesty consented to hold bilateral meetings on
the sideline of the UN HighLevel Plenary Meeting of the General
Assembly.
The monarch first consented to hold a
bilateral meeting with Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo at
the office of the President of the Security Council in the UN
Headquarters.
During the meeting, both leaders
discussed efforts to enhance bilateral relations between the two
countries.
His Majesty later expressed
appreciation to Macapagal-Arroyo for the contribution of Filipino
nationals to the country's development.
The Sultan then held a bilateral
meeting with President of Mongolia Nambar Enkhbayar.
In the meeting, His Majesty and
Mongolian president discussed bilateral matters of mutual interest.
To enhance relations between Brunei
and Mongolia, Enkhbayar extended an invitation to His Majesty for an
official visit to Mongolia.
At both meetings, the monarch was
accompanied by HRH Prince Mohamed Bolkiah.
Later in the afternoon, His Majesty
consented to hold a four-eye meeting with King Abdullah II bin
Al-Hussein of Jordan at the UN Headquarters. --
