ISB Students Volunteer At Pusat
Bahagia
Bandar Seri
Begawan - The new cohort of Year 12 students from The
International School, Brunei have been visiting Pusat Bahagia this
month to fulfill a very important criteria of their International
Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma course.
"All IB students must complete at
least 150 hours of community service, creative and sporting activities
in order to graduate at the end of two years. This is a significant
part of the CAS (Creativity, Action and Service) component of the IB
Diploma Programme, as it encourages students to develop into
proactive, independent and caring young adults," explained Mr Neil
Elrick, the CAS Coordinator.
The IB students interacted with the
children at the centre in an effort to gain a better understanding of
their special needs and their developed skills.
The centre produces woven baskets,
costume jewellery, songkok, kain sinjang and other local handicrafts
through their classroom teaching and workshops.
"We were very touched when we visited
Pusat Bahagia. The special children and teenagers there produce a
variety of products. We were so impressed with their skills,
especially when we realised some of the teachers were mute and blind
as well. We want to help them sell their handicraft to raise extra
funds as it would make them so proud of their achievements," said
Danial Mahmud, an IB student.
Another IB student, Jona Tay
expressed her concern for the children, "We are rehearsing song and
dance performances to entertain these special children during their
October birthday celebrations. This is a simple way for us to enrich
their lives and bring more joy to them."
The IB students are currently working
on plans to promote the centre and its handicrafts to both the ISB
community as well as the wider community.
"This type of community service is
invaluable, as our IB students become fully involved in genuinely
helping others and recognising the importance of giving. Our students
are also learning so much about teamwork as well as their own selves,"
added Mr Keith Powell, IB Coordinator. --
