738 Students Participate In
Massive Khatam Ceremony

Begawan - A total of 738 students from 11 religious schools in
the Brunei Zone II yesterday gathered for a massive and historical
Khatam al-Quran ceremony at the International Convention Centre (ICC)
in Berakas.
The guest of honour for the function
was Dato Paduka Hj Sulaiman bin Hj Ismail, Permanent Secretary at the
Prime Minister's Office as well as Datin Hjh Zaimah binti Hj Nudin.
With the cooperation of 11 religious
schools in the Brunei Zone II and the Brunei Zone II Religious School
Supervising Committee, the massive Khatam ceremony was began yesterday
afternoon. Out of the 738 students that took part in the event, 345
were male.
Haji
Md Said bin Abas, Chairman of the Brunei Zone II Religious School
Supervising Committee, in his welcoming remarks, said that there are
about 1,000 Primary Six students studying at religious schools in the
Brunei Zone 11 this year but the committee only allowed 800 students
to participate,
Through a stringent "Tasmik" test by
senior al-Quran teachers from the 11 schools involved, only 738
students got through the test.
The schools involved in the massive
Khatam ceremony were PAP Mutawakillah Hayatul Bolkiah Religios School,
PAP Hafizah Sururul Bolkiah Religious School, Lambak Kanan Religious
School, PAP Aziemah Nikmatul Bolkiah Religious School, PM Abd Azim
Religious School, Madang Religious School, Tanah Jambu Religious
School, Salambigar Religious School, Lambak Jalan Bedil Religious
School, Sungai Besar Religious School and PGGMB Sg Akar Religious
School.
The ceremony held at the ICC started
with a mass recital of the Surah al-Fatihah, followed by a recital of
the al-Quran Surah by the students.
There was also Takhtim and Dikir
Ashraqal performed by religious school teachers of Brunei Zone II.
Khatam
is a process of one person reading through the 30 Juz of the holy
Quran which every Muslim is encouraged to perform in Brunei. It could
be performed during the early years or at a later stage.
Khatam
al-Quran is organised annually by not only religious schools but also
other educational institutions in the Sultanate. --
