Promote Traditional Games
By Jon Tampoi
Bandar Seri
Begawan - In its efforts to preserve the national identities
that are slowly eroding, the Brunei Museum Department has taken steps
in various projected forms to reintroduce local communal culture
through the ethnography section.
Co-chairman of the traditional games
of Bukit Udal Workshop, Pudarno Bincin, who is also the Curator of the
Ethnography of the Brunei Museum Department said this during the
workshop that was held at the community hall of the Puak sang Jati
Dusun of Bukit Udal in the Tutong District.
Most of these efforts are in line
with international meetings and conferences that were attended by a
number of officers of the department, he said.
The various moves to preserve
communal cultural traits are made possible with the support of various
village councils, he added.
The ethnography section has made two
moves to help preserve these cultural traits, which are launching of
various exhibition of cultural material and propagating workshops on
the selected subject.
The guest of honour who officiated
the event was the Director of Museums, Awg Hj Matassim Bin Hj Jibah,
with the knocking of a turtle shell gong.
At the same function, a traditional
games book entitled `Permainan dan Sukan
Tradisi
Masyarakat Brunei Darussalam' (Games and Traditional Sports of Brunei
Darussalam) was launched.
The book will be distributed later.
The event was attended by interested parties, local community members
from nearby areas, local residents as well as officers of the Brunei
Museum Department.
The aim of the workshop was to
preserve and document traditional games that are found in Brunei
Darussalam. It was organised jointly by the Brunei Museum Department
and the Village Council of Bukit Udal. The cochairperson of the
project was the Village Headman of Bukit Udal.
This is one of the many projects of
the Brunei Museum Department.
Thirty-five participants from various
associations, education institutions, Brunei Museum Department and
individuals attended the workshop which was conducted by five cultural
experts, namely Benson bin Tunggoh, Perak bin Nayud, Gumpol bin Runtub,
Chominah @ Chomwah bin Sidin and Mandin bin Uking.
A demonstration of four traditional
games was presented during the workshop and six other traditional
games were exhibited. Various handicrafts produced by the local
residents were also on sale. --
