NDP Briefs Public On Its
Constitution
By Rosli Abidin Yahya
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Brunei's latest political organisation, the National
Development Party (NDP), held a briefing of its - constitution at the
SEAMEO-VOCTECH Building in Gadong yesterday, pledging to become an
effective partner in nation building while the leaders would not
expect anything in return from the government.
Pro-tem deputy president, Awang
Mahmud Morshidi Awang Othman, told more than 100 people who attended
the session that its executive council members should not aim for
positions in the party as well as anything from the government for
being a partner in national development.
"With full awareness of the current
political climate, members of NDP must only possess a sense of
responsibility to ensure the role of their party in becoming a
strategic partner of national development.
"In the context of Brunei Darussalam,
the concept of a just and benevolent government is more appropriate
and excellent compared to various concepts of governments in the
world.
"This is what the party is working
for. Thus the need for members to work solely towards national
development and progress in the era of globalisation so the Sultanate
can be a more competitive and active economic and trading partner with
friendly nations," he said thanking the government for recently
approving the party to exist as a legal political organisation.
He reminded attendees on the vision
and mission of NDP to ensure the nation remains forever as a Malay
Islamic Monarchy or NUB that has been the Sultanate's national
concept.
He also outlined the objectives of
the party including inculcating a sense of undivided loyalty among the
subjects of His Majesty towards their ruler and his descendents.
He added the party will also strive
to educate and instill the spirit of nationalism, love for their
country and an understanding of politics as an activity to be carried
out peacefully and in an atmosphere of total civility.
He told attendees that the party may
be holding its first congress next April and outlined various projects
that could be implemented as a partner of the government.
NDP
was approved as a political organisation by Registrar of Societies
last August 31 with 83-year-old Yasin Affandy as its pro-tem leader.
The party also has pro-tem vice
presidents from the four districts as well as heads of various
bureaus, and youth and women movements. --
