Kuala Belait Gets Royal Gift Of Dates

Kuala Belait - A ceremony was held yesterday morning at the Belait District Office to mark the distribution of boxes of dates granted personally by His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalarn to the Muslim population.

Some 47,500 boxes of dates were distributed to the district's penghulu and ketua kampong yesterday by the Acting Belait District Officer Awg Hj Mohamad bin Hj Abd Rahman.

He urged the village chiefs to distribute the dates before Ramadhan.

The penghulu and ketua kampong discussed and came up with the most effective system-of- distribution to residents, particularly within the remote areas of Mukim Labi.

Members of the public can collect the boxes of dates on a later date.

HRH Prince 'Abdul Malik initiated the distribution of the 300-gramme packs of dates, personal gift of His Majesty to the Muslims in the country for the coming fasting month.

The dates are among the food eaten during the month of Ramadhan for centuries, HRH said in his sabda Wednesday at the International Convention Centre.

HRH added that the dates are to be eaten during the breaking of the fast. Some 373,666 pieces of 300-gramme packs of dates are fie to-distributed to all Muslims in the country before the fasting month.

The-Yasasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah has secured from Saudi Arabia a three-year supply of dates to Brunei until 2007. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
