Local Historians To Share
Expertise At Seminar On Islam

Begawan - Local historians will be sharing their expertise at a
seminar to be held 'at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Kuching from
September 21 to 23 that will be exploring the development of Islam in
China and Southeast Asia.
Pehin
Dato Dr Hj Awang Mohd Jamil AlSufri, the Principal of History Centre
of Brunei Darussalam, is expected to be one of the forum panellists.
He would be joining Dam Hj Putit bin Matzen of Sarawak Islamic Council
(MIS).
Entitled "The Struggle in the
Development of Islamic Ummah", the forum will be the last itinerary
for the September 23 seminar. It will be conducted at 5pm before the
official closing ceremony.
Meanwhile, another intellectual from
Brunei, Hj Mazanan Hj Yusuf, will be delivering a working paper
entitled "Islam In The Malay Archipelago: Its Impact On Culture In
Brunei And Sarawak on September 21 at 2.30pm.
Just before Hj Mazanan delivers his
paper, the seminar will have an official opening ceremony officiated
by Sarawak Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud at 10.30am.
Organised
by MIS and Uiliversiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) in conjunction with their
50th anniversary, the seminar will be divided into three sessions -
"Islam in China", "Islam in Southeast Asia" and "Islam in Sarawak"
with special reference to Brunei.
Some 14 working papers will be
delivered over the course of the three-day seminar.
Among them are "Development Of Islam
In Southeast Asia: A Historical View" by Dr Othman El-Muhammady; "The
Future Of Islam And Its Challenges" by Dr M.A. - Zaki Badawi; "History
Of Wali Songo: Their Influence On Islamic Propagation" by Dr Uka
Chandra Sasmita; and "The Development Of Science In The Islamic World:
The Role of China" by Prof Dr Mohd Yusuf Hj Othman.
Other papers to be presented include:
"Islam In China: History And Development" by Prof Wu Zongyu;
"Confucius and Islamic Belief: A Philosophical Analysis" by Associate
Prof Dr Yaacob Yusoff; and "Da'wah In Thailand" by Dr Wan Sabri Wan
Yusuf.
The seminar is open to the public.
Seminar fees cost RM150 per person or RM50 for students. Participants
will be given a bag as well as meals for breakfast, lunch and two tea
breaks.

Organisers
hope that the seminar will attract academics and scholars to undertake
research on issues concerning Islam.
It is also hoped that it would help
enhance cooperation and develop strategic action plans for the
development of Islam in the region. --
