Memories Of Brunei
By Alex How
Bandar Seri
Begawan - His study in Brunei was a very interesting experience
for Aurelius Gordon, the first Dominican to complete the Master's
degree course in Public Policy at the Faculty of Economics, Business
and Policy Studies, Universiti Brunei Darussalam.
Gordon was one of the graduates to
receive the Masters degree from His Majesty the Sultan at the 17th UBD
Convocation held at UBD's Chancellor Hall on September 6. Before he
left Brunei on Tuesday, Gordon advised local students to take up the
opportunity to study in the Dominican Republic.
"I hope many more students from my
country will be able to experience Brunei, and I hope also that
students from Brunei will visit and study in Dominica," the graduate
teacher said.
Previously, Gordon served as a
graduate teacher of Social Studies at the Good Will Secondary School
in Dominica.
He was also a part-time lecturer and
tutor of Sociology, Education Research Methodology, and Social Science
at various educational institutions in his homeland, such as the Sixth
Form College, the Dominica Teacher's College, and the Extra Mural
Department of the University of the West Indies.
"Being in Brunei, for me, was a very
enlightening experience, because it involved a new culture and an
Islamic country," Gordon said. "But the Caribbean is similar to Brunei
in terms of the climate. Both countries have the tropical climate."
Gordon, who also speaks French
fluently, was the fifth Dominican citizen who studied in UBD.
Previously, four Dominican students completed undergraduate and
diploma programs in Brunei. Darussalam since 1995, under the
Commonwealth Scholarship Programme.
Gordon was formally educated at the
Hon. Wills S. Stevens Primary School in Marigot and St. Mary's
Academy. He also holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Thomas
University, New Brunswick, Canada with a Psychology major and English,
Sociology, French and Political Science minors.
While doing his Master's programme,
Gordon conducted research in the Area of Education Policy Formulation,
Implementation and Evaluation.
The title of his research project is
called `The Impact of the Implementation of the 1997 Education Act on
the Management of Dominican Secondary Schools'.
Other researches conducted by Gordon
included the Study of Public Policy, Public Policy Analysis, Advanced
Research Methodology in Public Policy, Economic Aspects of Public
Policy, Public Policy Formulation, Implementation and Evaluation, Risk
Assessment and Risk Management in Public Policy, Public-Private Sector
Partnership and Privatisation, Good Governance and Public Policy, New
Public Management and Public Sector Reform and Public Sector
Administration.
Gordon expressed his sincerest thanks
to the governments of the Commonwealth of Dominica and of Brunei
Darussalam, his family and friends for the successful completion of
his Master's programme. --
