The Brunei Shotokan Karate
Association (BSKA) organised the Open Shotokan Karate Championship at
Tutong Sports Complex from 10th- 11th September.
The tournament attracted the
participation of clubs from several local schools including Maktab
Sains, STPRI, MTSSR, PDS, SOAS, and Maktab Duli were combined with
karatekas from the sports complex for a total of about 150
participants.
Children as young as six years old
were also given a chance to compete in the 19 categories that were
contested such as both in Kata and Kumite.
Present as the guest of honour for
the event was President of the Brunei Karate Federation (BRUKAF), Pg
Hj Kesteria Pg Hj Mohd Yusof, who gave away trophies to the winners on
the last day of the tournament.
There were also four other individual
awards handed to those who performed exceptionally throughout the
two-day tournament. Farid Adlun and Ampuan Harizah were named the
overall best participants in the under 15 years old category, while
Mohd Adli and Siti Irmaya were named the overall best contestants in
the 15 years old and over section.
BSKA's
objectives of organising the two-day tournament were to help promote
closer ties between members of karate community as well as cultivate
an interest in the sport for potential members. It has plans to hold
similar tournaments in the near future, also involving the various
other styles of karate practiced in Brunei.
