Brunei Tightens Immigration Laws

Begawan – Brunei’s immigration laws are to be toughened. It has
increased sentences and conduct more raids as a deterrent.
An official announcement over Radio
Television Brunei (RTB) said the Department of Immigration and
National Registration that His Majesty Sultan of Brunei has consented
to the amendment of the Immigration Act known as the Amendment of the
Immigration Act Order 2005 with effect from July 2.
Under this new amendment, anyone
found guilty of harbouring or employing any immigration offender shall
be sentenced to imprisonment of not more than two years or fined not
less than $3,000 but not more than $6,000 or both.
For the second and subsequent
offences, a jail sentence of not more than four years or a fine of not
less than $6,000 but not more than $12,000 or both will be enforced.
Apart from introducing the law for
heavier sentences as a deterrent to violators, the Immigration and
National Registration Department itself and in cooperation with other
law enforcement agencies will continue to carry out operations and
inspections from time to time at places where immigration offenders
are believed to be staying, working or hiding.
The Department of Immigration and
National Registration also welcomed information from members of the
public of people suspected of violating immigration pass, illegal
immigrants and foreign nationals who outstayed their visit passes to
contact hotline 2383-555 and 2383-777 or the nearest police station.
