By Rosli Abidin Yahya
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Some 38 participants representing 16 countries
including Brunei Darussalam are currently attending a three-month
programme to learn Indonesian arts and cultures in Yogyakarta, Bali
and Bandung.
They are the recipients of this
year's arts and cultural scholarship programme provided by the
Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA).
Twelve of the international
participants - comprising artists, lecturers, actors, dancers and
students - were sent to Yogyakarta, while the rest are in Bali and
Bandung.
The Indonesian MFA has been offering
such scholarships for three consecutive years since 2003. This year,
it offered the scholarships to 30 nations but only 16 countries
responded positively. Among them are Brunei, Malaysia, Singapore,
Papua New Guinea, Vietnam, Tuvalu, Solomon Islands, Japan, Australia,
Thailand, Fiji, Tonga, Micronesia, Philippines and Vanuatu.
During their stay in Yogyakarta, all
the participants will live with an Indonesian family. They will be
exposed to various Indonesian cultural experiences such as the
Javanese dance Karawitan, puppetry, batik making as well as the
Indonesian language and Javanese traditions. --
