17,000 New Terms For Malay

Begawan - Some 17,000 new terminologies were adopted at the
5-day 19th Specialist Conference of Language Council of Brunei
Darussalam, Indonesia and Malaysia (MABBIM) that ended Friday in
Tutong in an effort to enrich and augment the Malay language.
Held at the Hotel Plaza Halim in
Tutong, the closing ceremony of the conference was officiated by
Tutong District Officer, Awang Abdul Mutalib Hj Mohd Idris.
Also attending were Acting Director
of Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) Brunei, - Dr Mataim Bakar;
organising chairman cum head of representatives of Brunei Darussalam,-Hanafiah
Zaini; representative of Malaysian delegates, Hjh Halimah Hj Ahmad;
and representative of the Indonesian delegation, Dr Sugiyono.
The 17,000 new entries adopted at the
conference comprised of terminologies covering mass communication in
printing and publication, Islamic religion (akidah or faith, religious
comparison and tasauf moral), nursing (nursing clinic), tourism
(development and progress), dentistry (surgery, mouth and
orthodontic), and education (curriculum, education technology and
psychological education).
MABBIM
has ten specialist clusters. Six clusters discuss the formation of
terminologies and one cluster oversees publication and scrutiny.
The language cooperation body was
formed on May 23, 1972 with country members comprising of Indonesia
and Malaysia. Before the inclusion of Brunei Darussalam as a member,
the body was known as the Language Council of Indonesia and Malaysia (MBIM).
