Sultan Highlights Importance Of ICT In Economic Development

Bandar Seri Begawan - His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam yesterday consented to launch the National Summit on Information Society (NASIS) at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Berakas.

Accompanying the monarch were His Royal Highness Prince Haji A1-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's Office, HRH Prince Abdul Azim and HRH Prince Abdul Malik.

Also in attendance at the ceremony yesterday were senior ministers, permanent secretaries, members of the diplomatic corps and invited guests.

Upon arrival, His Majesty and the royal entourage were welcomed by Minister of Communications Pehin Dato Hj Awang Abu Bakar bin Hj Apong and Deputy Communications Minister Dato Hj Mohd Yussof bin Hj Abd Hamid as'well as other members of the organising committee.

The monarch, in his titah, highlighted the importance of ICT in further developing the nation's economy while improving the standard of living.

Shortly after officially launching the ceremony, His Majesty consented to tour the e-Applications Expo, participated by some 32 government agencies and private companies that demonstrate and showcase the latest software or e-applications that they are currently utilising.

The expo highlights the development in e-government and the technology that is currently being implemented in various ministries and government departments.

It also showcases the applications used in the daily business operations in the private sector.

His Majesty and the royal entourage, during the tour, also took a closer look at the software applications. The e-Applications Expo, which ends on September 10, is open to the public. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
