Basic Orientation Course For Overseas Filipino Workers

Bandar Seri Begawan - The first session of the Basic Orientation Course for Overseas Filipino Workers was held at the Philippine Embassy Chancery last Sunday with the embassy's Labour Attache, Aida Estabillo, and Welfare Officer, Ma. Victoria Demingoy as the speakers.

Scheduled to be held for six consecutive Sunday afternoons, the Basic Orientation Course is aimed at informing Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) on Brunei's labour and immigration laws and addressing the medical and legal concerns of OFWs.

The course also hopes to familiarise them with the embassy's consular, labour, "welfare, SSS and PAG-IBIG services.

Throughout the course, the OFWs would also have the opportunity to interact with officials from the embassy and the various authorities concerned.

In her opening remarks, Philippine Ambassador, Ms Virginia H. Benavidez said the embassy has embarked on the project in line with the great importance placed by the Philippine Government on overseas Filipino workers and their welfare abroad. She said providing assistance to nationals is a key pillar of the Philippine foreign policy.

She hopes more Filipinos in Brunei would join the course in the coming Sundays.

Dr David Colin Reynolds of the Riverview Clinic will be the guest speaker for the Sept 11 session while Daljit Singh Sandhu of Sandhu & Co will speak at the Sept 18 session. Representatives from the Immigration and Labour Department of Brunei have also been invited for the succeeding Sundays. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
