By NAJ

Bandar Seri Begawan - Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Institute of Education (SHBIE) will be celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Teaching Education in 2006.

Even though SHBIE is now part of Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), it has a long history of providing educational service to the community and takes pride as the country's oldest higher education institution.

Teaching Education was first set up in 1956 to train 20 probationary Malay teachers at the Brunei Teachers Training College or Maktab Perguruan Melayu Berakas.

In 1971, the college was moved to a new complex in Gadong, whieh was officially opened by His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam and renamed Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Teachers College.

During its 12th Convocation Ceremony in 1984, the college was again renamed the Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Institute of Education.

It was incorporated as part of UBD as the Faculty of Education, offering Science and Arts Education degree programmes in 1985.

In 1988, the institute officially merged with UBD. Since 1988, SHBIE has continued to develop its services as the main provider of Teaching Education at the Certificate, Diploma, Bachelor, Master and Doctorate levels.
