By Azaraimy HH
Bandar Seri
Begawan - A seminar on Syariah and Civil Law ended on a high
note on Tuesday evening at the Orchid garden Hotel.
Guest of honour at the closing
ceremony was Attorney-General of Brunei Darussalam, Dato Paduka Awg Hj
Kifrawi Dato Paduka Hj Kifli. Director of Islamic Law, Ministry of
Religious Affairs and seminar chairman, Awang Hj Tasim bin Hj Akim
presented certificates to speakers.
During the two-day seminar, a total
of seven working papers were deliberated and discussed.
The seminar was participated by
representatives from both government and non-government sectors,
including participants from the Sabah Syariah Judicial Department,
Sarawak Syariah Judicial Department and the Federal Territory of
Labuan Judicial Department.
Participants from the Sultanate
comprised representatives from the Ministry; of Religious Affairs,
State Mufti, State Judicial Department, UBD, Internal Security
Department, Department of Immigration and National Registration, Royal
Customs and Excise Department, Royal Brunei Police, Royal Brunei Armed
Forces, private law firms and Islamic financial institutions.
Awg
Hj Tasim said the seminar ran smoothly and there was an encouraging
response from participants.
However, he added the two-day
duration was inadequate for thorough discussions of all topics.
Nonetheless, he hoped the seminar provided knowledge and benefited
participants, especially those who were closely involved with or whose
professions involved state law.
He added that discussion of the
working papers could be used as guidelines for law practitioners.
Awg
Hj Tasim said the role of Qarinah in Islamic law was pervasive, but it
could not be taken lightly. Theresult of Ijtijad must also be exposed
to re-evaluation to fit it into the new reality of life.
However, the re-evaluation must not
undermine the credibility of the principle of Syariat that forms the
bases of Ijtijad.
He said the seminar had achieved its
aims and objectives even though there were still related issues that
were not discussed. --
