Brunei Gets Taste Of Japanese
Sit-Down Comedy - Rakugo
By Jon Tampoi
Bandar Seri
Begawan - A Japanese cultural showcase was recently launched at
the Goldstone Ballroom of Centrepoint Hotel in Gadong. It was
organised by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports with assistance
from Embassy of Japan and funded by the Japan Foundation.
Present as guest of honour during the
launching was Pehin Major General (R) Dato Awg Hj Mohammad bin Hj Daud,
the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports.
The cultural identity of the Rakugo
in Japan is similar to the Western version of stand-up comedy with
only one difference - the Japanese version is performed whilst sitting
down.
The kimono-clad hilarious
presentation of Rakugo was done in English and the group has been
touring the world over.
The five-member group presented
humorous ever-green jokes that date as far back as the 17th century.
The Rakugo in actual fact is a
combination of story telling, hilarious miming, singing, voice
changing and expressing through facial mimicry.
The storyteller performs various
characters in one sitting of story. The props used are the Sensu (fan)
and the Tengui (hand towel).
The musical equipments used also
highlight the up and down moods. Apart from the story telling, there
were also magic shows. --
