Entertain Local Audiences
By James Kon
Bandar Seri
Begawan - The public will have a rare opportunity to view a
Japanese sit-down comedy performance on Wednesday afternoon at 2.30pm
at the Centrepoint Hotel in Gadong.
The Japanese Rakugo Troupe comprising
five prominent members arrived in the country yesterday morning with
promises of a good laugh for the local audience.
Organised
by the Embassy of Japan in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture,
Youth and Sports, the Rakugo performance will be performed in English.
Admission is free.
Rakugo
is a unique form of storytelling, which includes comedy and play. It
is also a traditional form of performing art, dating as far back as
the end of the 17' century. Rakugo is best described as Japanese
sit-down comedy, where the performers wear traditional Japanese
costumes and kneel throughout the performance.
One performer normally acts out the
whole story alone, playing the part of several characters and
switching from one distinct character to another by changing voice,
facial expression and manner.
Since 1998, the widely popular Rakugo
Troupe has been performed on more than 180 stages in nine countries in
Europe, North America, Oceania and Asia. The Brunei performance will
consist of a Musical interlude, Rakugo "The Haunted Plate House" by
Oshima Kimie, Rakugo "A Man in a Hurry" by Katsura Kaishi and a
Japanese Magic show, among others.
Invited guests will also get a
preview of the performance this evening at the Centrepoint Hotel. The
guest of honour who is scheduled to attend the event is Pehin Major
General (R) Dato Seri PahlawanAwg Haj Mohammad bin Hj Daud, the
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports. --
