Students
By Hjh Saemah Zulkefli
Bandar Seri
Begawan - A ceremony to celebrate 23 new Brunei Shell Petroleum
(BSP) scholarship students set to begin their respective courses was
held yesterday at the Panaga Club. Officiating at the event was the
Acting Managing Director of Brunei Shell Petroleum Sdn Bhd, Awg Hi
Zainal Abidin bin Hj Mohd Ali, who gave a welcoming speech to the
students.
Under the BSP scholarship scheme, the
majority of students will begin their first-degree programme in the
United Kingdom, for which they are scheduled to depart on Thursday,
September 8.
Of the 23 students, three are BSP
employees undergoing in-service scholarship programmes, where two will
be taking Mechanical Engineering in the UK while another will be
studying at Institut Teknologi Brunei (ITB).
Two Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD)
students will also be continuing their studies - as part of their
twinning programme - at one of the universities in the UK.
In his speech, Awg Hj Zainal Abidin
stressed that "the scholarship is a starting point for every student
selected" and that there would still be many challenges to be faced,
most notably the exposure to a higher level of education as well as to
the new social and cultural environment whilst studying abroad.
He said that the company has high
hopes for all the selected students as well as parents, family and
friends, adding that students should be prepared to face any
challenges positively to achieve success.
The function also saw presentation of
mementos from BSP to the new scholarship students by Awg Hj Zainal
Abidin. --
