By Rol Ezam & Malai FadleyRizal

Bandar Seri Begawan - A 52-year-old workshop owner was fined $1,500 or three months' jail in default after pleading guilty to employing an immigrant worker without a licence from the Labour Commissioner.

According to Deputy Public Prosecutor Christopher Ng, the defendant, Hj Shawal bin Hj Nasar, a local, had employed a Malaysian who was on a social visit pass to work at his workshop at the Beribi Light Industry in Gadong.

Authorities discovered the defendant's act when Immigration officials conducted an inspection on the defendant's workshop on September 4, last year.

The illegal worker was brought in for investigations.

Malaysian Stanly Mawan Mika worked as a mechanic at the workshop earning on a commission basis, the prosecution said.

The defendant claimed that he was still waiting for Stanly's employment pass to be processed during that time. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
