Conference Boost For Syariah And
Civil Laws

Begawan - The Islamic Legal Unit with the cooperation of the
Islamic Eminence Development and Communication Section, Ministry of
Religious Affairs is conducting a two-day Conference on Civil and
Syariah Laws.
Officiating the opening ceremony
yesterday at the Orchid Garden Hotel in Berakas was the State Mufti,
Pehin Dato Ustaz Hj Awg Abd Aziz Juned.
Organised
in conjunction with this year's Isra' Mikraj celebration, amongst the
objectives of the event are to provide and increase understanding on
information on law to legal practitioners and higher education
institutions.
The conference also aims to observe
the development of law information in the syariah court in the
Sultanate and Malaysia and observe the differences between syariah and
civil laws.
Law, said the chief guest in his
opening speech, is an apparatus to seek justice and it is important
that justice is an objective for whatever law.
Syariah
laws cover all religious aspects and the various penalties, while
civil laws refer to specific laws related to human beings and are
utilised to differentiate criminal laws.
Yesterday's opening ceremony began
with a welcoming speech by the Director of Islamic Law Unit, Ustaz Hj
Tasim Hj Akim, who is chairperson of the organising committee. He
highlighted the objectives of the conference.
A total of seven working papers will
be presented at the seminar where the participants comprise
representatives from government agencies, prosecutors, legal
practitioners, private sectors, university students and participants
invited from Sabah and Sarawak.
Three speakers from Malaysia have
been flown in to present their working papers, namely, Dato Hj Aidi
Mokhtar, Dato Hj Mohd Asri Hj Abdullah and Azmi Talib.
After the opening ceremony, three
papers were presented yesterday, including a presentation by Chief
Justice of Syariah, Pehin Datu Imam Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Hj
Abd Hamid Bakal, who spoke on "Syariah Law Information Guarantees
Justice".
In the afternoon, Dato Seri Laila
Jasa Professor Dr Anwarullah delivered his presentation on "Standard
of Proof: Offences of Ta'zir and Offences of Huddud", followed by a
presentation by speaker Encik Azmi Talib. Question and answer sessions
were also conducted at the end of each presentation.
In the evening, the participants
attended a dinner hosted by the Minister of Religious Affairs, Pehin
Dato Dr Ustaz Hj Awg Mohd Zain Hj Serudin at the minister's official
residence.
The seminar will conclude today with
a closing and certificate presentation ceremony to be officiated by
the Attorney General of Brunei Darussalam, Dato Paduka Awg Hj Kifrawi
Dato Paduka Hj Kifli. --
