Graft Busters
By M K Anwar
Bandar Seri
Begawan - More than 30 anti-corruption and anti-drug officers
are learning undercover techniques from the Las Vegas police.
|
The course is organised by the
Anti-Corruption Bureau and facilitated by two professionals from
the International Association of Undercover Officers from the Las
Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. Besides the officials from
Brunei, officers from Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore are also
taking part.
The two-day course on Advanced
Undercover Techniques and Survival is attended by local officers
from the Anti-Corruption Bureau, Anti-Narcotics Bureau and the
Royal Brunei Police Force.
Present during the opening of the
two day course was the Senior Assistant Director of the
Anti-Corruption Bureau, Abang Haji Kifrawi binAbang HajiAbu
Hanifah. In his opening speech he noted that corruption has been
identified by the World Bank as the single greatest obstacle
towards economic and social development which undermines it by
breaking down the rule of law and weakening institutional

The fight against corruption cannot
be won without public support, participation and vigilance, he
added.
"The people at large, media,
business associations and non-governmental bodies play a crucial
role in the development of a comprehensive approach to developing,
implementing and evaluating an anti corruption strategy," said the
Senior Assistant Director. |
On the course, he said that it
represents the authorities' ongoing commitment to enhance multilateral
relationship and cooperation amongst the regional anticorruption
agencies.
The aims of the course are designed
for law enforcement officers starting to work undercover or have
worked undercover for some time.
The course will be essential for new
undercover officers and provide veterans with a solid reminder of the
undercover work principles. The survival or second part of the course,
meanwhile, will train them on their safety during undercover
operations. --
