Heroes
By James Kon
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Embassy of the People's Republic of China in the
country yesterday paid tribute to millions of fallen heroes
during the war of resistance against
Japanese aggression and worldwide war against fascism 60 years ago by
hosting an exhibition at the residence of Chinese Ambassador to Brunei
Darussalam Miss Yang Yanyi.
According to the ambassador, in her
welcoming speech, the war engulfed 60 countries and two billion
people, accounting to 80 per cent of the world population.
She added that in China, the Japanese
war of aggression lasted 14 years, between September 18, 1931 and
September 3, 1945.
The human losses amounted to 35
million people, in addition to the US$ 100 billion direct economic
loss and US$500 billion indirect economic loss.
"We gather today to join other
countries and people worldwide to pay our noble tribute to men and
women who fought courageously and sacrificed their lives for the final
victory. And we also need to reflect on the grave lessons brought
about by the scourges of war and as the saying goes: `The past not
forgotten serves as a guide for the future'," she said.
Besides the dozens of war pictures on
display at the exhibition, there was also a live broadcast of
programme directly from China in conjunction with the commemoration.
Among those present at the event were
Deputy Minster of Culture, Youth and Sports Dato Paduka Awang Haji
Yakub binAbu Bakar and members of Chinese associations in the country.
