A Taste Of Life On The Farm

Bandar Seri Begawan - A group of special children from the Society for the Management of Autism Related Issues in Training, Education and Resources (SMART) Centre were yesterday treated to camel rides and other fun activities at the livestock farm of Hussyn Rahman Enterprise Co in Jalan Bengkurong Masin.

Accompanied by 10 teachers and two assistant therapists, the visit is aimed to expose the special children to fun and learning activities at the farm, said Head Teacher Arlene Arce.

"There are three levels of autistic children - early intervention, intermediary and high functioning.

"At this visit, we are actually exposing the intermediary autistic children to the outside world so they could grasp reality," she said.

The visiting group was greeted on arrival by Operation Manager Johari Leman and Assistant Managing Director Hj Disdy Husdyman Shah bin Hj Mohd Hussin.

Apart from camel riding, the children also visited the various animal shelters at the farm, the abattoir, meat processing area and the meat shop.

The visitors were also given cans of cooked camel meat as souvenirs.

The Hussyn Rahman Enterprise Co Farm occupies a total of 20 acres with five acres dedicated towards the cultivation of grass for, the consumption of the reared animals.

SMARTER Brunei Darussalam has a centre at Jalan Sengkurong ‘A’ and a branch in Kuala Belait, assisting a total number of 58 autistic children.

The association is formed to help parents and guardians identify autistic children for an early intervention programme.

Autism is a life-long development problem that can only be traced in the first two years of life, where mental development is slow in terms of social interaction and communication ability. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
