Youth As Catalyst For Development
By Azlan Othman
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Youths constitute a catalyst of development,
regardless of their origin, educational background and lifestyle.
To operate as a catalyst in the
context of living in a community and in a nation, youths should
possess the basic ingredients. They are bound to the community's
guidelines and order.
This was stated by the Minister of
Culture, Youth and Sports, Pehin Major General (R) Dato Seri Pahlawan
Awg Hj Mohammad yesterday as guest of honour at the opening ceremony
of His Majesty's 59th birthday anniversary celebration for Kampong
Lumapas: The celebration was held at the Lumapas Primary School.
The Minister added that in the
context of living in a community and a nation, the people are bound to
core values. One of such values is "possessing the spirit of
patriotism", which is to be proud of oneself as part of a sovereign
community as stated in the country's Independence Day declaration.
"Self-pride and patriotic spirit
among others could be created, for instance through respecting the
national flag, national anthem and the Malay language as well as
through practicing decent values within the context of the Brunei
community such as loyalty to the leader as well as dedication," stated
the Minister.
"To assimilate the decent values to
youth is the responsibility of all parties in the community," he
added. "Through coordinated efforts, youths should be guided along the
right pathway so that they understand their roles and contribution in
nation building.
As a generation that will continue
the developmental process, they should stand firm and possess
patriotic spirit to face challenges in life and to be able to overcome
such challenges."
Pehin
Awg Hj Mohammad also said that the friendly partnership between the
younger and older generations is vital in nation building; as such
synergy would produce greater impact in the community.
The celebration was organised by the
Lumapas Youth Association (PERLU) and village residents with the
cooperation of the Youth and Sports Department, Ministry of Culture,
Youth and Sports. --
