Bruneian Rides To Victory
By Alex How
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Pengiran Mohd Nasir bin Pengiran Anak Jaafar made
Brunei proud when he emerged as the champion in the Young Riders World
Cup category of the Merdeka Masters 2005 in Kuala Lumpur from Aug
25-28.
Participants were from Malaysia,
Singapore, Thailand, Canada, Philippines and Brunei.
Pengiran Mohd Nasir beat 30 other
riders when he managed to ride the only double clear round with his
horse Salinata, reportedly bought untried over the internet despite
finishing the rounds in 52.61 seconds.
Rayani Razak of Malaysia riding ARL's
Xulana produced the fastest time at 46.81 seconds but he knocked a
fence down to finish second.
Razak's compatriot Kean Tan was in
third place and looking good till the second last fence of the
jump-off came down.
It was heartbreak at the last fence
for Singaporean Nadia Chen who only managed to finish fourth in the
tournament.
Malaysian Ikhwan Hafiz had the class
and an RM10,000 bonus at his mercy as he started very well with
Malaysian Open YR winner La Bonita.
If he could win this one, he would
get the bonus. Perhaps it played on his mind because he made a very
sharp turn to the penultimate jump-off fence and his horse refused.
Ikhwan finished fifth.
In sixth and seventh position were
Malaysians Syazna Leena Zulhasnan and Amir Zulkefle riding Helu
du-Codard and Desert Wind respectively. --
