Native And Joyous Moment On Display
By James Kon

Bandar Seri Begawan - Marol and Osman Mohammed, two prominent figures in the local art scene, will be showcasing 15 of their latest artworks- in an exhibition today (September 2) at the Alliance Francaise in Simpang 130-15, Kg Telanai.

Marol, a promising young artist, has seen his artworks exhibited around the globe in such countries as Austria, Italy, Hungary, Germany, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore.

Marol said, "My instinctive desire is more inclined towards `ethnic' and `native' environments because most of the materials that are used are nature based.

My artworks focus largely on elements of movement and active strokes on monochrome surfaces to create a sense of rapid motion combined with spontaneity to counterbalance its background.

It gives the connoisseur the impression of subtlety although it may initially appear somewhat aggressive."

"This stems from the fact that my artwork takes on the form of `abstract expressionism', focusing on living things that can usually be found on the seabed and in the tropical rainforest. The artwork is therefore easily absorbed when viewed more intently," he added.

"In essence, upon closer observation, the combination of precise strokes and colours on hard layered panels creates an overall feel of mystery."

With the theme Translation, his works include such pieces as Morning in January, The Great Barracuda, Silhouette at Balaton Lake, Fern 1, Fern 2, El Matador and Spirit of Budapest.

So which is his favourite? Marol replied, "The Great Barracuda" because "it reminded me of the happy moments when I went fishing with my family and the team spirit of the catching the barracuda."

Marol hopes that more budding artists follow in the footsteps of local artists to continue their good work. He also appealed to the relevant authorities for assistance in helping to promote local art by providing a proper place to showcase art as well as introducing art competition.

The other artworks on display are by Osman Mohammed, who is among the most experienced artists in the country.

With the theme "Lines of Happiness", his creations include Windows, Exhilarations, Celebration, Sketchbook, Gala, Horizon at the East, Vegetation and Waves.

Osman Mohammed said, "The world is full of sadness, stress, disaster and bad news which affect human lives.

My paintings are about the happy aspects of human lives." "Vibrant colours, rapid strokes, harmonious chaotic shapes and lines help me to create and depict emotions of the positive side of human lives."

Both artists conveyed their thanks to Alliance Francaise for its support in promoting local art.  -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
