'Lucky Draw' Scam Targets Local
Chinese Community
By Rosli Abidin Yahya
Bandar Seri
Begawan - The public especially members of the Chinese
community are advised not to reioice if they receive text messages
stating that they have won US$108,000 (about B$.182,250) in lucky
draws, because it's a scam.
Some members of the Chinese community
said they did receive such text messages or SMS.
However they added that when they
replied or called the sender, they were told that they would need to
deposit some amount as tax or fee before they would be entitled to the
cash prizes.
"The woman who answered my call said
that I needed to deposit US$1;000 in a foreign bank account as the
processing fee and tax, saying that it was mandatory to do so," said
one near-victim.
"When I asked the woman a lot of
questions, the woman got agitated and hung up.
"A few more people that I know have
also received similar text messages and I just wanted to inform the
public to be aware of the scam," he added.
He called for receivers to ignore the
messages completely as it was apparently a `con job' and a scam to
cheat people especially members of the Chinese community.
"The scam artistes only need a few
victims to fall for their tricks out of the several SMS that they
send. We hope these few victims can be made fully aware," they said.
They also warned the public to be
wary of mailed pamphlets from a Feng Zhu Zhen Ren who claims that he
is a `master' who can help people achieve wealth and luck in love and
marriage. --
