Jogger's 11-Hour Ordeal In Jungle
By Azaraimy HH and Hj Minor Absah
Bandar Seri
Begawan - A routine jogging yesterday morning turned into an
11-hour ordeal for a father of four that triggered a massive search
involving a rescue squad from the Fire Services Department, police
ranger and Gurkha personnel with tracking dogs.
The 40-year-old man, Abdu Hai bin
Yusof, who works as a security, had only water from waterholes to
quench his thirst as he tried to find his way for 11 hours in a jungle
around the peak of Bukit Teraja, one of the popular jogging areas in
the capital.
Around 6.30 pm, he found his way back
after following sounds made by a search party including friends and
fellow joggers.
He said he lost track of his
whereabouts around 8:30am, and using his mobile phone called some of
his friends to rescue him. However, his friends' attempts to find him
were unsuccessful, and worse his cell phone battery went flat.
The fire brigade rescue squad was
then called along with personnel from police ranger. At about 2:30pm
Gurkha
personnel also joined the rescue operation with tracking dogs.
The man said he is a frequent jogger
at the spot but did not know how he lost track in the jungle.
He said he would probably rest now
after the ordeal before thinking of going for a jog at the same area
again. --
