Magical Cures and False Teachings Land Six In ISD Detention

Bandar Seri Begawan – Magical cures, special massage sessions, medicinal portions made out of roots and herbs and false teachings are understood to be the reasons why six former Al-Arqam members were nabbed here according to reliable sources.

A man in Labuan Island in the neighbouring Malaysian territory is said to have inspired the activities of these bogus medicine men who were also Islamic deviationists.

Yesterday the Internal Security Department (ISD) said it has detained six locals who were followers of the Al-Arqam Group under the Internal Security Act.

They are being held for their involvement in trying to revive the Al-Arqam Group, which was banned in the country since 1991.

Investigations carried out by the department found that the detainees who were former local members of the Al-Arqam Group with the assistance of the group’s overseas followers, have carried out activities with the intention of reviving Al-Arqam and to attract former followers in this country to rejoin the movement, a Radio Television Brunei (RTB) report said.

These efforts were carried out with the instructions from the top leader of Al-Arqam who lives abroad and former followers of this movement are still in contact with him, the report added.

Investigations that have been carried out by the Internal Security Department revealed that the Al-Arqam group in this country has no connection with any terrorist or militant groups in the region or with any international arena.

The Al-Arqam was found to have carried out activities in the form of an outlawed organization and practice teachings that could deviate the Islamic faith.

Al-Arqam was a Kuala Lumpur base fanatical religious cult that preached Islamic revolution three-years ago.

It was smashed and leaders jailed.

Reminence also attempted to set a foothold in Brunei but were swiftly nipped in the bud.

The department also reminded the public especially Muslims to be extra careful and not to engage themselves with any group that practices teachings contravening the Sunni Faith or Akidah Ahli Sunnah Wal-Jamaah and banned by the authorities.

The Internal Security Department and other security agencies in the country will not hesitate to take action against individuals or groups that were found to carry out activities contrary to the country’s law and regulations, the report added. -- Courtesy of Radio Television Brunei
