New Salary Scale For Govt Teachers

Bandar Seri Begawan – A new salary scale to keep teachers in the profession has been announced.

The new scale which is said to benefit teachers more was mentioned by the Deputy Minister of Eduration, Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohammad bin Pengiran Haji Abd Rahman, at yesterday's closing ceremony for the first Teachers' Day conference in conjunction with the 18th Teacher's Day Anniversary at the Main Conference Hall of the International Convention Centre in Berakas.

The ceremony began with a welcoming speech by the Co-Chairperson of the event, Awang Haji Suhai la bin Haji Abd Karim, Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Education.

This was followed by a speech by the Deputy Minister of Education in which he stated that a country's development depends on the quality of education.

He added that in this respect, the Ministry of Education expects teachers to deliver excellent education to their students.

"In other words, the success of our students lies in the efficiency of our teachers. The process of teaching and learning should be monitored and teachers should be motivated."

Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohammad also said that he believes that teachers should be qualified in their respective subjects, charismatic, have leadership qualities and be dedicated, as well as adhering to the national concept of 'Malay, Islamic, Monarchy'.

Talking on the steps taken towards increasing the number of professional local teachers; the Deputy Minister said the Ministry of Education has formulated a special scholarship scheme for those having an ambition to become teachers in the future.

These people would be sent abroad for higher education to meet the requirements of the country.

Furthermore, he mentioned that a new salary scale has been promulgated by His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam to benefit teachers more than before.

"This has been announced to keep teachers in the teaching profession," Pg Dato Dr Mohammad stated.

During the Teacher's Day celebration last Saturday, His Majesty in a titan had consented for a new service scheme for teachers, called the Teaching Service Scheme (Skim Perkhidmatan Perguruan).

Through this scheme, teachers with caliber will have the opportunity to get a higher promotion and at the same time able to remain working at their schools.

His Majesty also reiterated that steps towards increasing the number of local teachers in the long term must be planned especially in producing professional human resource.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Minister said that the conference discussed various topics related to the teaching profession and proposed concrete resolutions to help develop the country in the field of education, especially to face the challenges of the 21st Century National Education System (SPN21) that will be implemented next year.

Another speech by a representative of the conference participants was followed by the presentation of resolutions from the Teachers' Conference by Rajah Dayang Donnaliza bte Abdullah Puasa, Joint Chairperson of the event.

Later, certificates were presented by the guest of honor to participants from various ministries, sponsors, invited speakers and foreign delegates.   -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
