By Syafiq Affendy

Bandar Seri Begawan – For the first time ever, the Ministry of Defence and the Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF) are deploying five RBAF personnel to participate in a peacekeeping mission in Lebanon under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

The five personnel will be embedded with the Malaysian military forces' peacekeeping mission under the command of the Malcon West 1 Contingent for nine months. They are scheduled to depart from Kuala Lumpur on October 25 with the rest of the Mal con West 1 Contingent.

A ceremony to hand over Brunei Darussalam's national flag to the RBAF UNIFIL members took place at the Rimba Air Base yesterday.

Present as the guest of honor to hand over the flag was the Deputy Minister of Defence, Pehin Datu Singamanteri Colonel (Rtd) Dato Seri Paduka Awg Haji Mohammad Yasmin bin Haji Umar.

The leader of Brunei Darussalam's contingent to Lebanon, Major Norhazalan bin Hj Abdullah, received the flag.

The contingent consists of two officers and three personnel of other ranks.

They are 514 Major Norhazalan bin Haji Abdullah; 621 Major Dr Muhammad Hiza Wardy bin Haji Abdul Halim; 9428 Warrant Officer 2 Haji Zulkifli bin Emran; 10870 Staff Sergeant Abdul Rahim bin Abdul Razak; and 11240 Sergeant Mohd Tony bin Haji Hashim.

The personnel had undergone a three-month Force Integration Training in Port Dickson, Malaysia in preparation for their participation in the peacekeeping force.

The training not only helped to prepare them to undertake the UN mission in Lebanon but also gave them the invaluable opportunity to fully integrate with the rest of Malcon West 1 Contingent members.  -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
