By Rol Ezam

Bandar Seri Begawan - The sole proprietor of DMD Enterprise was fined $3,250 or three months' imprisonment in default by the Bandar Seri Begawan Magistrate's Court yesterday after he pleaded guilty to having in possession 286 uncustomed telephones.

The defendant, Chua Teng Siong, 37, paid the fine.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Christopher Ng said all the telephones were seized from his shop at Unit No G 31, The Mall, Gadong on April 29, 2004 by a group of Customs Prevention Officers and the Telecom Department officers.

The defendant admitted that all the 286 telephones found belonged to him and were brought in from Miri and displayed in his shop for sale.

He also admitted that he did not have any approval to sell the telephones from the Telecom

Department and that they had not been declared to customs at any time.

The estimated market value of the telephones was $10,726 and the estimated duty payable amounted to $536.25, which is five per cent of the total value.   -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
