Brunei, China Trade On Rise

Bandar Seri Begawan - Bilateral trade between China and Brunei Darussalam is climbing-steadily with trade in the first seven months of this year alone showing an increase of 7.3 per cent, reaching US$157 million.

Madam Tong Xiaoling, Ambassador of the People's Republic of China to Brunei Darussalam, highlighted this in her welcoming address during the Reception for the 59th Anniversary of the Founding of the People's Republic of China at the ICC, yesterday.

Touching on the exchanges at all levels, Madam Tong said, "In August, His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam attended' the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games. His Majesty will soon visit China again and attend the 7th Asia Europe Meeting (ASEM) to be held on October 24 in Beijing.

"Her Royal Highness Princess Hajah Masna will visit Nanjing, Jiangsu Province and celebrate with us the 600th anniversary of the visit to China by Boni Maharaja Karna," she said.

"China and Brunei are close neighbors and trustworthy friends. We are deeply touched by the goodwill and support extended by His

Majesty's Government and the Bruneian people to the Chinese government and people in our disaster relief and our hosting of the Beijing Olympic Games. Friends in need are friends indeed," said the ambassador.

Recalling China's significant event this year, the Chinese ambassador said, "The year 2008 has been an eventful year for China and the people. We overcame the severe snowstorm in January and the devastating earthquake in May. We have successfully hosted the Beijing Olympic Games and Paralympics in August, realizing the Chinese nation's Olympic dream of 100 years.

"We have also fulfilled the Shenzhou VII manned space mission in September, achieving a breakthrough in China's space technology development."

This year also marks the 30$ anniversary of China's reform and opening up, which shaped the course of China's development. In 2007, China's GDP reached US$3.61 trillion, the third largest in the world.

Remarkable progress has also been achieved across all social sectors and the Chinese people's living standards have greatly improved, added Madam Tong.

Later, Madam Tong joined guest of honor Pehin Orang Kaya Setia Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Dr Awg Hj Ahmad bin Hj Jumat, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, to cut the cake to mark the event.

Madam Tong presented souvenirs to the minister and his spouse. Guests were treated to an array of performances.

Traditional Chinese dances and Wushu performance were the highlight of the evening.
