Cigarette Smugglers Busted In Menglait

Bandar Seri Begawan - The personnel of Royal Customs and Excise Department in cooperation with the Immigration and National Registration Department seized 138 cartons of cigarettes and 10 cartons of traditional conventional medicine, believed to have been smuggled into the country.

In an early morning raid, an Indonesian woman and man, both in their thirties, were detained for further investigation.

Six customs officers from the Intelligence and Prevention Section together with officers from the Enforcement Section of Immigration and National Registration Department successfully made the seizure of smuggled contraband in an area at Kg Menglait, Gadong.

During the search, the cigarettes were found without proper warning labels from the Ministry of Health while the cartons of medicine did not have approval from the Pharmacy Department of the Ministry of Health.

The estimated total worth of the confiscated contraband is at $6,174.

The case is still under investigation and both suspects may be charged under the Customs Act 2006.
