New SMS Scam Targets Bruneians
By Rosli Abidin Yahya
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Mobile phone owners in the country who have
received messages saying that they have won a windfall via SMS are
advised to ignore and delete them right away.
|
According to Yahoo users, such scams
have earlier surfaced in other countries whereby mobile phone
owners were asked to write to a Yahoo e-mail address to claim
their prizes.
"Yahoo did publish a statement
informing the users that it has never started a Yahoo Lottery
and all the messages are fake and must be deleted as soon as
they reach the handphones.
"Yahoo doesn't send unsolicited
SMS and we don't permit others to send unsolicited messages via
mobile phones. We're actively pursuing all available legal means
to stop these miscreants from abusing our name and your inbox,"
the search giant said.
If "winners" communicate by
e-mails trying to claim their "prizes", they will eventually be
fleeced by the fraudsters.

The "winners" will be asked to
deposit certain amount of money if they want to claim their
windfall. |
After the money is sent, fraudsters
would ask for more money or the "winners" will never hear anything
from them again.
Many Bruneians have received an SMS
stating "Your Phone number 673****** won $9,500 in the Yahoo 2007
Mail Alert Programme. Winners contact mailprize223@yahoo.com for
free claims and delivery details."
The so-called "text scam" or "phone
scam" is a criminal scheme whereby the victim would be informed
through SMS or through a phone call that his or her mobile phone
numbers have won money in a raffle draw purportedly sponsored by
Yahoo.
The swindlers would then try to get
their victims to remit or deposit money to certain bank accounts
designated by them, supposedly for the payment of tax and other
fees, as a precondition to getting the alleged prize.
Once the swindlers withdraw the
money, the victim would no longer hear from them again. As a matter
of precaution, the public should always be cautious of any scheme
(lucky draw, raffle draw, etc.) which they have not participated in
and which requires the payment of certain fees before being given
the prize. -- Courtesy
