By Azlan Othman

Bandar Seri Begawan - A total of 30 accidents were recorded during the last three days of the Hari Raya festivities. Police have advised motorists to be extra careful while behind the wheel especially during the current wet spell.

Brunei-Muara District recorded the highest number of accidents with 20 cases reported in the district alone.

Four accidents were reported in Belait and five in Tutong, while Temburong District recorded only one accident during the three-day period.

A 25-year-old local woman was the latest victim when she died in an accident during a downpour along the Tutong highway on Sunday afternoon. She was the lone passenger in a car driven by a 24-year-old local man. They were on their way to the capital when the accident occurred.

Meanwhile, police also warned the public to be wary of opportunistic thieves who prey on children wearing jewellery, particularly at shopping outlets. The reminder came after an incident involving a child whose jewelleiy was snatched when she was left alone while her mother was shopping.

Police also recorded two car break-ins and thefts, while four cars were reported missing. Five houses located in Kg Kiarong, Kg Terunjing, Jalan Muara and Sungai Liang were broken into, while a shop along Jalan Pemancha in the capital was also broken into.

Among items reported stolen in the break-ins were fireworks, 'Ayeng AsahAsahan' or scented water to be sprinkled on tombs, two bicycles and a boat engine.

Another eight thefts were recorded inside buildings leading to the loss of 30metre and 15-metre cables, cash amounting to $2,445, 20 fuses, a necklace, a laptop and two wrist watches.

The thefts occurred at Kg Bukit Panggal power station, Kg Sinarubai, two departmental stores in Lambak and Kg Sungai Tilong, Centrepoint in Gadong, Jalan Ong Sum Ping and Jalan Kumbang Pasang.

Police also recorded one fraud case, six vandalism cases, three assault cases, one case of extortion and two rape cases.

Two men were arrested in connection with this crime and they are facing up to 30 years' jail and several strokes of the cane. Police also detected one misuse of drug case and detained three men and three women. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
