Foiled
By James Kon
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Thanks to a tip-off from the public and speedy action
by the Prevention and Intelligence Section of the Royal Customs and
Excise Department, a bid to smuggle 300kg of dubious frozen meat into
the country was foiled yesterday evening at an area in Kg Kiarong.
In addition to the confiscated meat,
a local man, 21, who was caught in the act while unloading the goods
from a car, was detained by the Royal Customs and Excise Department's
Enforcement Section, but was released on bail after the investigation.
Led by the Assistant Superintendent
of Customs, seven enforcement officers went straight into action after
receiving a call about the activity from a member of the public.
They waited at a mouse trail in Kg
Junjungan (a wellknown smuggling route in Brunei) from 7pm and tailed
the suspect to an area in Kg Kiarong. Another team of enforcement
officers were also waiting at the unloading area.
Upon reaching a small road in Kg
Kiarong, the young man started to unload 15 cartons of dubious frozen
smuggled meat. The enforcement officers then swept- in to detain the
suspect and confiscated the meat with a custom seizure notice.
If found guilty, the suspect may face
a fine of double the meat's total price or $40,000 under the Custom
order.
The Royal Customs and Excise
Department's Prevention and Intelligence Section thanked the informer
for the tip-off and urged anyone who is aware of any smuggling
activity in the Sultanate to provide valuable information by sending
an SMS to or calling 8714422. -- Courtesy of Borneo
