Korean Envoy Praises Cultural Ties
With Brunei
By Lyna Mohamad
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Cultural exchange is one of the most significant and
dynamic aspects of the relationship between S Korea and Brunei.
The Korean Ambassador to Brunei Mr
Hwong Won Khun made this observation at the opening of the Korean
language and Culture Week yesterday at the Universiti Brunei
Darussalam.
"I think' the UBD Korean Language and
Cultural Week has another significance as it is taking place on the
University campus. The university is the place where the future
leaders of our society are living and spending time"
Young adults are more open-minded
than the established generations and it is very meaningful to have an
opportunity to introduce Korean culture to the nation's open-minded
future leaders, he said.
"I believe cultural exchange is one
of the most significant and dynamic aspects of our bilateral relations
between Brunei and Korea.
This year will be a very meaningful
year for both countries as our bilateral trade volume will surpass
US$1 billion," said Mr Hwang Won Khun. This is above all due to the
globally rising oil price, he said. However, sales of Korean-made
cars, one of Korea's major export items to Brunei, saw a sharp
decrease by more than 50% this year, he said.
"Like this, our real co-operations
have their ups and downs, some areas gain and others lose" he said.
The cultural exchange and cooperation
however are not affected by the surroundings and conditions. The
beautiful traditional music of Brunei sounds always beautiful whether
played by local traditional musical instruments or by western ones.
"It gives the same sensation to
Korean hearts as well as to Bruneian hearts. Like this, cultural
exchange contributes to deepening the mutual understanding and is
beneficial to both sides," he said
In recent years Korean, culture is
quite well accepted by the contemporary Asians in many of Asian
countries including Brunei. Initially it was the Koreans who were
surprised to see that Korean culture was appealing to other Asians as
well.
In return, it worked to contribute to
enhancing Korean understanding on various cultures in other parts of
Asia and in sum, cultural exchange is reciprocal and enriches the
living of all ultimately. -- Courtesy of Borneo
