Café Offers ‘Swede’ Shelter After
Roach Attack
By Vincent Obina
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Two terrified Swedish tourists fleeing from a horde
of cockroaches took refuge and sat the night out in the Brunei
capital's 24-hour De Royalle Cafe in Jalan Sultan at midnight this
week.
When dawn broke, they took the first
bus to Miri from the town bus stand in Jalan Cator. Sophie and
Charlotte, both university students from Stockholm, had checked into a
local hostel and as they were turning in for the night a large number
of cockroaches invaded their room.
"We screamed and ran down for help,"
Sophie, aged 20, said. "There, were hundreds of them. It was
terrifying."
"It was impossible to stay there,"
added Charlotte. "We collected our luggage and checked out. The hostel
returned our money."
"After this horrible experience we
were afraid to check into any other hotel in Brunei and wondered
around town till we saw many people and the bright lights of De
Royalle.
"The cafe staff were very sympathetic
and made Swedish meatballs and good coffee for us, trying to console
us. The dish was just like home," Sophie said.
"However we did suggest the staff
members visit Sweden to get the taste of the real Swedish meatballs,"
Charlotte said, thanking the cafe staff for their kindness.
They also left a "Thank You" note.
